Gift Horse Gallery mouldings and frames

Mouldings and frames are usually made out of one of three materials, wood, metal or plastic.

Wooden frames are the most popular and account for 90% of the Gift Horse Gallery samples. The lengths of timber are shaped then stained, coloured, veneered or finished in one of many ways. The fact that wood is a natural product means its properties vary, this variation makes the wood absorb the finish in different ways, even over the same length.

Metal frames are usually powder coated extruded aluminium. This process gives a very uniform finish with clean lines and very similar colour finished from batch to batch. Aluminium frames are stylish, modern and strong, excellent if you want a narrow frame on a large picture.

In the making of plastic mouldings each manufacturer has a slightly different formula. Like aluminium it is extruded and then finished in the desired colour, it also has uniform properties leaving little variation in colour between batches. However plastic frames are brittle and are less likely to survive impacts. Plastic is favoured more by volume picture framers.
